Forcetracks is a German based label that is focused on developing quality deep house. It’s grown up from humble beginnings to being one of Germany’s premier house labels. The Forcetracks sound is one that for many will have a hard time getting accustomed to. It’s minimalist, deep, groovy, and very obviously German.
Hypercity is a showcase compilation containing a unique selection taken from Forcetracks’ single catalogue. The man chosen to mix this compilation was Andy Weatherall. Weatherall is a long established DJ and one half of the production team Two Lone Swordsmen. Andy is responsible for remixing the likes of (cue huge list): Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, New Order, The Orb, Beth Orton, Bjork, and My bloody Valentine. He also is a resident at one of London’s most enduring clubs, Turnmills.
Hypercity on first listen seems to be an eclectic mix of weird house with very obvious techno influences. On second, third, and fourth listen though it becomes easier to appreciate the sound and what Andy Weatherall is doing in the mix. A unique aspect of this CD is that it is actually mixed live by Weatherall on a pair of decks and not in a studio on Pro Tools. This is evident in the pops and clicks audible and is reflective of Weatherall’s ethos. The mix showcases tracks from Forcetracks artists like MRI, Safety Scissors, Hakan Lidbo, and Dirk Diggler.
This mix is an excellent listen for the discerning house music fan. The mixing is flawless and the tracks are quality through and through. However, this CD is very much not for everyone. The Forcetracks sound is an acquired taste. Even many DJ’s who spin tracks off the Forcetracks label admit this. Have a listen to this CD. Then have another listen, then another, and another. The sound grows on you.
