This release from Botchit and Scarper presents the new tune from Atomic Hooligan which is a name that will no doubt resonate with some breaks and house fans. These lads have been meddling with everything breakbeat oriented since the early 90s. The Atomic Hooligan duo consists of Matt Welch who is a classically trained violinist since the age of 4 and holds a Masters in Music, whilst Terry Ryan completes the pair bringing his Turntablist and DJ skills. Terry Ryan is a graduate of the School of Audio engineering and has been DJing for since he was a teenager. Their partnership began in a club environment many years ago and since then the duo try to combine their styles and ideas to produce new and refreshing breaks tracks.
2003 has seen the Hooligan’s profile rise exponentially, with guest DJ mixes on Kiss FM, Radio One and Ministry of Sound Radio. Other high points for the boys this year so far have been; mixing DJ Mag’s International All Stars Mix CD, remixing Born Slippy and their Shine A Light EP named Radio One’s Tune of the Week. Atomic Hooligan’s previous releases also enjoying a fair amount of success with both ‘Shine a Light’ and their remixes of Cowgirl and Born Slippy gaining excellent reviews. This single also chalks up Botchit and Scarper’s 50th release for the label.
The duo have also recently completed the new album titled You Are Here which contains the two tracks on this release. Both singles featured encapsulate all the distinctive sounds of Atomic Hooligan, these feisty sounds are aimed squarely at the dance floor. The track Head explores the techno influences of Atomix Hooligan and features the seductive and soulful vocals of Pavinda. The tough yet funky break beats and tight bassline are worked hard in a couple of nice drops whilst the vocal stabs fill the track out nicely.
The flipside features the track Just One More which is an awesome tune that rocks through with a cool guitar riff amongst huge break beats. The dirty bassline grumbles around amongst the hectic sounds and huge build-ups. This one is quite an intense track with a great vibe to it that would definitely get a dance floor going. Overall, this single presents two great tunes which are both unique yet share the characteristics of the Atomic Hooligan sound. Just One More is my favourite of the two however both tunes are a great listen.
