(Vinyl Pusher/Shock)
The CD single includes a collection of six remixes. The original is (so I’m told) Inaya Day’s interpretation of the Prince’s 80’s tune “Vanity 6”. It has been in the ARIA club chart for 18 weeks. Prior to this release Inaya is best known for her collaboration with Mr.Timothy, producing one of summers largest funky house bombs; “I Am Tha 1”. “Nasty Girl” follows the same formula, and none of the featured remixes dramatically stray from the formula.
Ivan Gough’s edit features a vocal overdose, layered over a thick humming bassline. The MousseT & So Phat mix is more club oriented; it features a catchy intro and that’s about it. John Course & MrTimothy’s interpretation numbs the vocals a little, and builds up the best out of all the versions. In the middle of the track the boys distort the bassline and chop / re-paste the vocals, which is effective. Luke Bowditch breaks up the beats, but that’s about it. Ajax & Damon’s re-jiggle adds some balls to the plate. It’s large and droning bassline, compressed riffs, and dubbed vocal combine with a funky electro ‘whoomp’ sound (think “Dooms Night”) to make this version the pick of the single. Wei-Shen & Marcos add a funky, tribal feel achieved by the use an acoustic guitar and funky percussion.
What it comes down to is; if you play mainstream upfront funky house, then buy this ASAP! But if this isn’t your thing, my god, save your ear drums!
