(Phantom/Sony)
I have to admit I’ve always thought of Mousse T as one of those ultra-commercial producers, whose forays into dance result in lots of cheesy vocal house. You know, the sort of guy who has worked with dudes like Roachford and Kathleen Chaplin.
Admittedly, he has done some really outstanding remixes of the likes of Missy Elliot and he does own one of the hippest labels in the world – Peppermint Jam – but it wasn’t until I heard this track that I thought “Actually, Mousse T is really unbelievably cool.”
This track is being played nationally in clubs on high rotation right (about) now, and rightly so. It’s something about the catchy vocal prowess of Emma Lanford (also the voice behind 2004’s monster Prince remake “Love Bizarre”) and the fusion of house and tech, but mostly it’s the unquestionable skill and experience of the producer that really brings this track home.
The standout mix, the Fuzzy Hair remix, is definitely the one to be played in clubs (thought it’s not labelled as such). It’s lighter on the vocals than the original and other mixes, but it’s got a toughness that’s just made for rocking the most discerning of dancefloors.
Quite simply, Right About Now is excellent, and a great example of the multitude of quality house tracks produced by, and from the label of, Mr. Mousse T.
