(A Touch of Class/Inertia)
Flamboyant US pop-rocksters the ‘Scissor Sisters’ have well and truly made a name for themselves. Whether you think they are straight out copying or paying homage to the likes of David Bowie, Elton John and Roxy Music, there is no doubt that their sexy, hard-edged sound has been a welcome relief to charts overflowing with mindless sap and bling bling. Needless to say it wasn’t going to be long before producers were jumping at the chance to remix this pop phenomenon.
‘Remixed’ features the track ‘Filthy Gorgeous’, ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘The Skins’ and ‘Electrobix’, each having been recreated from various angles. ‘Filthy Gorgeous’ gets a raucous going over from ‘Atoc’ (not the ‘Association of Train Operating Companies’) and ‘Superbuddha’, laden with brash guitar riffs, a storm of drums and topped with those wickedly dirty lyrics, it’s a hell of a lot more action packed than both the original and the ‘Extended Mix’ that also appears on the album.
The dance floor smash ‘Comfortably Numb’ is once again remixed by ATOC and in addition to the original warbling synths and digital beats, the track steps over to the glam rock side, all be it in a rather modest manner. On the contrary, Montreal born producer and bleep lover, Tiga, successfully turns ‘Comfortably Numb’ into the most unrecognisable track on the album. The beats are deep and dirty, with Tiga pushing the circuit board into overdrive as to extract every last drone and squelch possible from it.
The ‘12” Mix’ of ‘Electrobix, is a heartfelt rendition about a schoolboys journey into overcoming his ‘stick like legs’, in turn he gains loads of weight and turns into a ‘freak’. Its all very tongue in cheek, very electro pop in style and made all the more entertaining by the ‘Hungry Wives Remix’, a fabulously hollowed out hard house number with heavily decoded vocals.
You have to appreciate the self-indulgence and decadence that has become synonymous with the Scissor Sisters, and whilst none of these remixes are out of this world, they are a great addition to any party play list.
