With a sound that embodies both the natural and urban underbelly that surrounds him, ‘Mark Farina’ has played a large part in shaping the San Franciscan house scene. It is his unbiased appreciation for all things tuneful, that has made this the fifth instalment of Om’s ‘Mushroom Jazz’ one tasty treat, coming complete with molasses-thick basslines and bumpin hip hop flavas.

There is no argument that Farina’s ability to compile original and interesting tracklists has helped to raise the profile of the Mushroom Jazz series. What stands out more this time however is how exceptionally well mixed this album is, with Farina’s skill level and use of different techniques having improved noticeably since the series debuted in 2003.

Knowing how to bring out the best in every track, the album opens with J Boogie’s sexy dubbed-out groove ‘Afros in Ya’, which makes for the perfect transition into ‘The Tribute’, featuring the distinctive stylings of ‘Colossus’. Crispy beats and a warm melodious flow maintain the uptempo vibe as DJ Numark’s ‘Chali 2na Comin’ Thru’ and DJ Spinna’s ‘Nostalgia’ are intricately woven into the mix.

Gradually though, the pace slows down and smooths out with Farina’s doped out ‘Cali Spaces’, this is further complimented by the beautifully cool instrumental version of Wee Bee Foolish’s ‘Puttin’ in Work’, and the drifting horns of Pete Rock’s – ‘It’s a Love Thing’.

As the hooks and loops come to a close with the deeply satisfying ‘Nic’s Groove’, you will be left feeling quietly smug, knowing that you have been treated to one of those rarities that exemplifies quality.
