(Little Mountain/Stomp)
Sander Klienenberg’s song, The Fruit, has come in for a number of remixes lately, and this Australian only release includes mixes by Ivan Gough and Grant Smillie, and a version by UK breakbeat group, Future Funk Squad who have recently toured Australia.
Klienenberg, who has toured Australia with Renaissance has his own label, Little Mountain that also has releases by Steve Porter and Matthew Dekay. Along with his own releases, the Holland born artist who has been spinning records since the age of 15 has a large list of remixes under his belt, including working on songs by Annie Lennox, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Sasha & Emerson and Royksopp.
The Future Funk Squad remix begins with a minimal approach that fills out to a compressed beat. The synthesized vocal (done by Fluke’s Jon Fugler) and squashy electronic bass get the song grooving. The beat and the minimal electro sounds match perfectly to make for a very well rounded song that gets you jiggling. At just under half way a synth sound waves through giving your arms a little more to work with. It’s a tech tune that has allowed for the necessary phatness to add to the driving sentiment.
The second remix comes courtesy of the Ivan Gough and Grant Smillie, who have recently had out a remix of Deepface’s Been Good. The vocal comes in sleazily with the synth stab working into your consciousness. The beat is metronomic and relentless, this is a sparser version than the first, yet almost feels more effective for allowing the space between the layers. The breakdowns are fresh, allowing the song to revert back to itself after a slight break.
