“This is the song that ain’t got no melody (melody).” I have a penchant for ironic song titles and lyrics.
I hyper-ventilated when I first heard this in Reachin’ Records last week, and then almost beat Learned Hand to a bloody pulp when I discovered he had bought the last copy. I ended up beating him to a lifeless heap once he had played it out a few times. This is intelligent, emotional party music.
The track sounds a little like early 90’s dance in more ways than one. The bumping piano and funky bassline recalls “Unbelievable” by EMF and the blatant pitch-up of the vocal sample at a couple of points reminded me immediately of the amateur sampler abuse present in “Respectable” by Mel and Kim.
Please don’t misunderstand; I am trying to give points of reference for a track you will probably hear on Triple J but not hear on a conventional dance floor because it doesn’t slot in to a genre.
Included on the vinyl release is a Truby Trio mix and a dub, but I am still recovering from the original.
As the other vocalist on this track says, “Freak freak the funk da funk funk, freak the funk da funk funk.”
