Original pommy pranksters and rave veterans, no wait that’s KLF…um, pioneers of leftfield dance music with a sense of humour, no wait that’s the Orb. Who are Orbital again? However you classify the two torch-wearing oddbods, and these clauses are unrelated, there can be little doubt that they still have what it takes. Funny Break bounces along on the back of an elastic breakbeat and a sunny chord change and bassline, the kind that dissolve worries like a shaft of sunlight on a rainy day. This optimism is countered by the layered, ethereal female vocal, which brings that otherworldly element so essential to dancefloor bliss. The result is an organic fusion, a new thing, an emotional reference point for the ineffable. Nice tune, hard to talk about.
The remixes all meet the challenge of the original, reinventing with loads of license, but all retaining that eery, luminous female vocal. Layo and Bushwacka! have two goes, greedy sods, and score both times. The down remix, not surprisingly, is an ambientish version, that favours the uncanny android side of the original. Their up remix also tears up the tune to remake it in cyborg guise, producing a fine, haunting, deep house number. The weekend ravers mix which follows is quite simply fun as, great for making like a fish with your hands, and sounds like you imagine it would. The last remix is by Plumps DJs, just in case you thought the credits weren’t illustrious enough, and they apparently had exclusive license to inject the funk. I rate their effort as the most convincing new creation in its own right; it is a polished and structured track with an enticing intro, sparing use of Orbital’s hook (the famous female vocal) and a succession of dark, frenetic breakdowns that never lose their forward momentum. But what did you expect? Great tune, big names, great remixes.
