(Casa Del Discos/Creative Vibes)
Australia’s own Jeremy Joshua has been on the house music scene for the past 10 years. Having played, produced and promoted his heart out in both Sydney and Canberra – leaving hundreds of satisfied crowds in his wake – it’s high time the man released an album of his own.
Pray For Mojo is Joshua’s first long-player, following hot on the heels of the sell-out vinyl sensation Left of Centre. Described by his distributor (Creative Vibes) and label (Casa Del Discos), as having a “definite west coast US house feel,” the album neatly encapsulates the quirky loops and funky beats with which he’s made his name as a DJ.
While some of the tracks are downright strange, not to mention unbelievably repetitive (although that has to be expected with pure house music), most of the album is high quality. Comparisons with the likes of Derrick Carter – a man Joshua has incidentally played alongside – are unavoidable, but are actually quite close to the mark, as witnessed by the opening tracks.
The album become increasingly jazzy and idiosyncratic as it wears on, with standard house tracks punctuated by occasional interludes and well-chosen samples. It lacks the constant variety of greats such as Carter, but is impressively polished for a debut LP.
All in all, this is a nice little collection for late-night house music aficionados. It sets out to make you move, and – provided you’re in the mood – it’ll have you doing so in no time.
