(Simple/Inertia)
Will Saul is the producer and A&R behind UK label Simple Records. Growing up in Glastonbury, his obsession with music was fuelled with regular trips to his local Tor Records stores and treks to clubs around England. His wide ranging influences and natural flair for mixing and production have enabled him to develop a style of his own, praised in house, breakbeat and electronic circles for their strong grooves and subtely alike.
On his debut album Space Between, set for release on July 4, Saul weaves infinite melodies, deep space techno, stoner dub grooves and serene melodies. Mbira, the new single, is said to be inspired by Vangelis soundtracks and Detroit techno pioneers Juan Atkins and Carl Craig, and you can really see the influences. Sci-fi clicks, atmospheric whirs, moody glitches, haunting stabs and warm analogue bass-lines combine on this beautifully subtle track. Saul has the ability to weave smooth round bass with serene melancholy. An African finger piano, Mbira, where the track gets its name from, is introduced a short way into the track, and spliced throughout like a xylophone. Smooth and sharp metallic edges contrast with the other musical flavours.
Our own Infusion, who previously delivered a storming remix of Will’s track Cliff back in 2003, which also featured on the Simple 01 mix compilation earlier this year, are called in on remix duties. The remix is totally different to the original and another track in its own right even? Infusion are gaining notoriety both here and abroad with massive sets at Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass, Glastonbury, Creamfields and Rosklide, to name a few, and releases on labels like Marine Parade, Deconstruction and Audio Therapy. They have just relocated to the UK and will be playing with their new five piece band all over Europe this festival season.
Infusion add tasty funky-tech sounds, a more minimal approach and lots of sweeping cross-fade cancellations to the mix, and bleepy sounds which add a fun and kooky flavour. About a quarter-way into the track, Infusion’s typical progressive sound kicks in adding depth, warmth and flavour – Music you can dive into and let wash over you with bliss! About a third of the way in, the sound motif kicks in, with another Infusion style electro loop and melody to really grab your senses.
Another versatile and interesting release from the Simple label, stay tuned for Saul’s next single Tic Toc featuring Ursula Rucker, remixed by Swayzak, to be released shortly.
