(Renaissance/Stomp)
For the first decade upon its opening in 1973, Pacha nightclub played host to the rich and famous. Nowadays, Ibiza’s greatest export is more a playground to the sunburnt and wasted. Nevertheless, in preparation for this years up coming season comes the second in Renaissance’s ‘Ibiza Pacha’ series. At the helm are house legend David Morales, Trevor ‘Soul Nation’ Nelson, and daughter to Sir Mick, Jade Jagger.
Presenting the first of the three albums is David Morales. Featuring Hot 22’s ‘Ain’t No Love ’, Haji and Emanuel’s ‘Weekend’ and Suzanne Palmer’s ‘Free My Love’, this is a light, sugar coated selection of uplifting vocal house which does venture into the realm of cheesy commercial pop, trainspotters you have been warned.
Trevor Nelson takes to the decks for the second cd and for me its by far the best of the three. Great for a dance floor groove or lounge room slump, Nelson delivers a smooth mix of early funk, soothing house and old school hip hop. Highlights include Eric B & Rakim’s ‘Paid In Full’, Roy Ayres’ ‘Searching’ and the magnificent Bill Withers with ‘Lovely Day’.
On the third and final cd is Jade Jagger. Now I don’t know how long Jade has been DJing for but she has a little way to go before she reaches the superstar status of her rockstar dad. In what appears to be a rather obvious split between records from her own collection (Shake Ya Ass – Mystikal, Happy Valentine’s Day – Outkast, Superstylin – Groove Armada) and her fathers (Mannish Boy – Muddy Waters, Under Mi Sensi – Barrington Levy, My People Hold On – Eddie Kendricks). This is a rather awkward listen. The tracklist whilst a good one, just does not work in the ‘eclectic’ way Jade was hoping for and some of the mixing is just plain bad.
All in all this is one of those albums that you wont be disappointed in if you buy it, but you wont be missing out if you don’t, the choice is yours.
