(Spleen Records)

A glowing single from a promising newcomer to the progressive scene. Expect two new tracks with two remixes.

Jay West’sAbsence” is a deep and emotional experience like no other. The foundation of the track is the usual progressive rhythms and deep house elements. But unlike the normal progressive sound of today, Jay’s drums are largely dubbed, his melodies are unrelenting and hypnotic and the vocal work on the track is upstanding. The whispery male spoken word is a credit to the track. If you play your progressive highly dubbed and slightly out of left field, check out this track.

If the deep depths have you bogged down, Patrick Turners Telectro Dub of “Absence” may be for you. Where most remixes today bring the original onto the dancefloor, here, the remix is a completely different interpretation. The first half of the track is raw hi-hat chattering and a subtle electro riff that is complemented by a host of spacey sounds. In the latter stages of the track Patrick Turner carefully selects the successful elements in the original and uses them to build the mix. The remix is less dancefloor oriented than the original.

Also on the single is Jay West’s second track “The Way You Walk”. The track has been climbing up various progressive charts and has been picked and Hernan Cattaneo. The track is rich concoction of melodic layers encrusted with vicious hi-hat chattering and a hypnotic bassline. The track has a real ‘classical’ progressive feel. The building melody in the latter stages combined with a chanting tribal vocal will see this track do damage on the dancefloor. Morgan Page’s Mix of “The Way You Walk” is a disappointment. The mix could be considered a bland dub of the original. The hi-hats are too dominant, the bass elements get lost in the background, the other electronic sounding elements are too raw and uninspiring.

Overall a great single for scene newcomer Jay West’s, keep an eye on this guy his leftfield progressive flavor has a strong future. Check out the single!
