Price of ticket to see ‘Green Velvet’ strut it out live, $75. Watching a former “Ibiza, are you up for it” winner desperately covering their ears as they madly attempt to flee the tent only moments after the performance began… priceless. For those of you who actually are up for it, may I introduce Green Velvet’s fourth and ever so brilliant full length release, ‘Walk in Love’.
With the seminal ‘Flash’, ‘Preacher Man’ ‘Answering Machine’ and ‘La La Land’ to his credit, very few compare to the man born Curtis Jones (aka Cajmere). Revered for his bent lyrical style and unique blend of jacked up house and techno, he has kept us profusely sweating it out on the dance floor and left us gagging for more.
A manic beat driven escapade that hits you as hard in the guts as it does in the feet, ‘Walk in Love’ is free of pretension and chock-full of bold intelligence. With flatulent basslines, dirty synth tones and whipsmart circuitry driving this album, every party-rocking-belter of a track here is a highlight. On the lyrical front, prepare to be engaged by tales of worlds with lights and lasers but no UFOs, places where people prefer to dance and clap their hands over sex, lives that force pin up girls to live through magazines and parties where the real action is happening in the bathroom.
From the stand out tracks come the masterpieces. Firstly, the previously released single ‘Bathroom’; with a nod to Prince’s ‘When doves Cry’ this gem has been stripped down to minimal hollowed beats and simple but gritty percussion leaving you to focus on the bugged out vocals. Also one for the repeat button is ‘Victory’; with sounds coming from every which way, this is nothing short of a regal-psychobilly-ghetto-rave-up with a pinch of cabaret, it feels like it will never end and because its such an excellent ride, you really don’t want it to. Finally there’s ‘Come Back’, the wickedly carnal train wreck of a track that brings sleazy electro and queen-esque rock together in sweet musical matrimony.
A dazzling listen from beginning to end, it just doesnt get better than this…
