(Simple/Inertia)
The latest offering from Will Saul sees a dive into heavily dubbed depths laced with crisp percussion and rich soulful melodies. Check out the wicked remix by DJ T.
Will Saul’s flair for production and mixing of all tempo and styles into highly enjoying pieces of music has seen his respect from the music community grow. His debut album broke through music barriers in his exploration of dubby minimal infused lush melodies, inviting beats and raw vocal work. His latest two track single demands attention. First up, “Animal Magic” is about as stripped back as you’ll get. The deep lullaby embodies a very Afterlife feel, the percussion is minimal and the vocal is soft, whispered and hardly identifiable. The track is deep 6a.m sunrise dubbed breaks at its very best. Next up, “Copicat” strolls down the same path but takes a turn into more electronic territory. As with “Animal Magic” the melody is deep and drained, the percussion is minimal and raw, but in this track the drums are harder and four on the floor (but by no means is it ‘hard’!).
The final track on the single is DJ T’s remix of “Animal Magic”. Rebounding of his highly acclaimed ‘Boogie Playground’, T has produced a first class remix. Drawing out the dubbed elements of the original, he builds the early stages of the track by slowing introducing each element and twisting and manipulating them back into nothing, then building them again. In the middle of the track the micro glitch elements make it apparent it’s a DJ T remix. The track really picks up in the closing stages where it borrows from the Villalobos school of suspension building the track masterfully into a deep minimal techno ending. The track would not be out of place as an opening track in a minimal set.
Overall this is a good single from Will Saul, but definitely not his best. The quality remix from DJ T will sell records, check it out.
