(F-Com/Creative Vibes)
Arguably the love child of Aphex Twin, Herbert and Rammstein, Quentin Dupieux aka ‘Mr Oizo’ is a 25 year old artistic menace, leaving behind trails of electronic chaos wherever he goes, his debut album ‘Analog Worms Attack`both inspired and traumatised and his latest project ‘Moustache (Half a Scissor)’ is bound to do the same.
Not only a maker of music, the name Quentin Dupieux first became a buzz word in short film and music video. The creator of Levi’s hero ‘Flat Eric’ and producer of Laurent Garnier’s ‘Nightmare Sandwiches’, ‘Crispy Bacon’ ‘The Hoe’ and ‘Flashback’, Quentin’s rough, minimal and darkly witted style has also earned him a place with Michel Gondry’s ‘Midi-Minuit’. Back to the music as Mr Oizo and success has come to all that he has so far created, including the singles ’#1’ and ‘M-Seq’, the long player ‘Analog Worms Attack`and the accompanying soundtrack to ‘Flat Eric’, ‘Flat Track’ which went to #1 in Europe and sold more than 2 million copies.
Brash, chaotic and utterly without restraint, ‘Moustache’ is 17 short tracks where not a second has been spared and everything comes at you with brute force. It is a place where distortion, feedback and complexity are the norm. Basslines are dark, dirty and brooding, beats are fractured, punctured and fast, and melodies and harmonies come from tin cans, cow bells and soaring jets. Yet through the fog of static, the demented noise and the cut and paste processes comes a rhythm so electrifyingly good that you will have no choice but to succumb to the madness.
Obviously this wont be for everyone, in fact it wont be for most people, but for those craving to be taken out of their comfort zones, this is the destabilising place to be.
