(Mercury/Universal)
There’s a fine line between ‘album’ and ‘single’ when it comes to the BodyRockers. On the one hand, this is a CD with 11 tracks clearly listed on the back. And yet, once you’ve actually listened through said tracks, it’s hard to shake the feeling that you’ve just heard the same song 11 times. Let’s just say diversity isn’t their strong point…
The BodyRockers are yet another addition to the increasingly crowded electro household. True, I Like the Way is a very cool track, and has certainly worked its electro-rock magic in clubs and on dance compilation CDs alike. But the rest of these songs sound like a tired Eurotrash electro group trying on a raunchy image and failing miserably.
Besides the fact that the melody of I Like the Way actually shows up in Round and Round (did they think we wouldn’t notice?), this is a very sameish offering. There’s no discernable attempt to mix things up, to try something new and interesting: it’s just heavy synth, 80s rock beats and male vocals from track one to track eleven.
Albums like this suggest that the electro-rock-house hybrid movement really needs to be more adventurous if it wants to make it in the wide musical world. Burbling over a bassline like a bored male model is all well and good – and, I might add, has assured excellent sales for Fischerspooner in the past – but there’s only so long it can hold the punters’ interest.
Perhaps the programmers at Nova 969 and 2Day FM should hunt around for something better, instead of playing this bland rubbish to show how ‘cool’ and ‘club savvy’ they are.
