(Pacha/Stomp)
If you’re planning on attending at least one pool party this summer – and by the looks of the weather today I’d say there’s a good chance of that – make sure you pick up a copy of this disc on the way. Mixed by veteran-of-veterans Pete Tong and relative newbie Sarah Main, this album does a rather nice job of capturing the Ibiza vibe.
Let’s get the criticism out of the way: it’s a pity that Tong’s disc is…well…a little on the dull side. Bob Sinclar and friends offer up a nice little piece of summer-nights house in the form of Summer Moon, while Chab’s Closer To Me and Audio Fly’s Remember are similarly cool. The rest of the tracks on disc one, however, would be more suited to a warehouse party than a beach bash, and are too hard and repetitive to set a suitable summer tone. Perhaps Tong needs a break.
Sarah Main’s disc, by contrast, is 70 or so minutes of blissed-out summer house and electro-salsa rhythms. Setting aside Tom “aren’t we sick of this single yet” Novy’s Your Body, this mix brings together some very funky tunes from the likes of Subjet, Mike Monday and DJ Remo to create the musical equivalent of sandy beaches and palm trees. Latin beats, acoustic guitar breaks and chilled-out female vocals: what more could one ask for on a 30°C day?
