(Functional/Stomp)

In a grueling sixty-eight minute onslaught Jay Cunning and Atomic Hooligan demonstrate superbly why breaks most definitely isn’t dead. The mixed CD compilation weighted heavily by the duos own productions and remixes is of a high intensity that doesn’t fail to keep you moving. The mix celebrates the 8th birthday of Functional (formally known as Functional Breaks). Set up by the music industry identity Biff Mitchell, Beatz & Bobz is one of the world longest running monthly breaks events, having pushed the always advancing sound for over 8 years.

Beatz & Bobz Vol 5 will have you from the first note. Opening with an MC led intro recorded at one of Jay Cunning and Atomic Hooligan infamous 6 deck sets in Russia, the beats are slammin’ and jammin’, the vibe is party-friendly and the acid is served in dangerous dosages. The first track Cunning’s own ‘Bad Man’ embodies a huge rave flavour crossed with trancey Crystal Method synths. Strongly rooted by superb scratching the mix has a rich ‘live’ feel that is often lacking in the modern ‘Pro Tools’ mixes so prevalent on today’s shelves. The early stages of the mix will have you out of your chair in an instant; mashing nu-skool breaks with subtle hip-hop and electro influences the tempo varies widely but the vibe is consistent.

The lively and funky ride doesn’t cease through the often troublesome middle stages of breaks mixes. A standout track that fuses wicked hypnotic hi-hat chattering, heavy bass splattering and solid rare groove is Dopamine’s & Dr Benwahh’sKiss My Break’. Seamless mixing and perfectly constructed flow (attributable to around 25 years of mixing experience between them) is a testament to the skill of the duo and shines through in the mix.

As we approach the end of the mix the duo bring it all together fusing the funk, electro, hip-hop and groove elements displayed in the prior 45 minutes into a tightly constructed finale that would have even the most straight-jacket chin stroker grinning sheepishly front and center. Cunning’s masterpiece ‘Never Stop’ is the signpost to the end, from here local boy Klaus Heavyweight Hill gets a work-out with his nu-breaks mashed monster ‘Glo Stix’, the transition from breaks to 4/4, then into a huge build-up back into broken-beat territory would not fail to have the local nursing home pushing their walking frame to the limits. Check out the compilation!

Beatz & Bobz Vol 5 is a first class mixed CD covering all sorts of breaks hard and funk-fused. The notorious Jay Cunning and Atomic Hooligan have nailed it again!
