Morgan Page has made history, self-releasing the first white-label house music album ever. The album features 10 bootleg remixes (created only by Pro Tools and a handful of plug-ins) of artists such as Coldplay, The Kills, David Bowie, Norah Jones and Imogen Heap.
So it looks like Page will need a good barrister? At first that’s what he and I both thought. On further thought I can’t see the major record labels hurting him, I mean as Page said in a recent interview, “remixes are more of a marketing crossover tool than anything else”, that point aside there’s no doubt that most of his bootlegs with their heavy underground online presence, will not be noticed by the big guns he chooses to remix. Although Page is giving the big names some unasked-for publicity, he’s benefiting, too. He has been asked to remix some Ashley Simpson tracks he’s been licensing his own productions to brands such as Adidas, Subterranean, Arden B, Nike, Chanel and Nine West.
So who is Morgan Page? It all started in 1999 where he remixes Norah Jones for College radio; he sent the mix to Norah who loved it and it was allowed to be played on the radio. Fascinated by the crowds reactions and crossover appeal of his tunes he began to produce more bootlegs adding live bass and guitar producing a new edge to his sets. Today he is an internationally recognised Dj/producer supported by the likes of Sasha, Digweed and Roger Sanchez.
How does the music sound? To sum it up in one word ‘entertainingly-superb’. Each of the 10 bootlegs follows a new direction, some similar but none the same as the other pieces. Morgan covers areas such as tough electro/house, techy-melodic house, fresh progressive and solid-funk, leaving behind drab ‘progressive’ sound that he was known for in years past. First is my personal favourite, his bootleg of Coldplay’s ‘White Shadows’, this big-room house monster will have dancefloors shaking. The next highlight is the bouncy bass and tech-infused madness that is Page’s bootleg of The Kills ‘The Good Ones’, another one for the dancefloor. It’s all over with his magically melodic infamous bootleg of ‘Angel’ by Wax Poets feat Norah Jones.
It’s not only bootleg territory that Page explores his track ‘Landline’ was recently signed to Zabiela’s Hearing Aid label and is due to be released shortly. Currently the album unavailable to download (due to bandwidth costing Page thousands of dollars a week!), but will be available again soon, check Page’s webpage for details (http://www.morgan-page.com).
