Ok, maybe I still retain awful subconscious memories of dingy country pubs, but I swear the riffs in this, the latest tune from Rogue Traders, sound like the 1979 hit My Sharona. Regardless, Watching You features a simple electro-rock melody (flavour of the month isn’t it!) and angsty fempop vocals. It seems more suited to drunken uni nights than bona fide electronic music events, but maybe the difference between, say, Field Day and UNSW O-Week bar nights aren’t much different these days.
Dirty South gets into the act here with their Vocal Mix. Throw out the rock beats and the cheesy vocals. Add deep, plodding (yet effective) beats, and a better lyricist. This elevates the tune from Thursday night at the UniBar to Saturday nights at insert House club of your choice. The Dirty South Dub is cut from the same mould. The vocals are supplied courtesy of electronic tampering. Watching You isn’t going to win any awards for originality, but I do wager it becomes staple fare amongst the House and commercial dance scene.
