D+K Sessions

Hydrofunk Records

As a follow-up to their first 1999 release “Prozac Beats”, 2 Dogs duo Dave Atkins and DJ Katch have released “D+K Sessions” on their home-grown record label “Hydrofunk Records”. Also of Resin Dogs fame, Katch (crowned the “Godfather of Queensland Hip Hop) and Atkins have produced a quality brew of laid-back dance grooves, hip-hop beats, abstract funk, with a hybrid of samples thrown in as the icing on the cake.

Rising from the depths of their Brisbane home studio, aptly named “the Pound”, this album has been serviced by a who’s-who of worldly hip-hop talent. The duo have collaborated with some of Australia’s leading MC, DJ and production talent including DJ Ransom, Raph-Boogie, Lazy Grey and Len-One (of Brothers Stoney) and B.V.A. of Mnemonic Ascent. Also appearing from the USA is heavyweight freestyle MC Abstract Rude (from Industry Records and the Nu Gruv Alliance).

Undoubtedly the highlight of the album is our introduction to Australian female MC Kowhai (pronounced Cor-Fi) on the jazzy hip-hop track “Character Spill”. Be sure to give “Funky 2+1”, “CSC” and “Numero Uno” a good listen.

With some especially funky bass and vocals, these are the kind of tracks you will end up leaving on repeat all day.

The album gives strong testament that Australian hip-hop is certainly not following behind the rest of the world. With some smooth production from Jebb Love, Ransom and Jimmy Z, plus the remarkable efforts of our Aussie rappers, the quality here leaves you pining for more. Watch out for the chic cover design and sneaky hidden tracks… if only I wasn’t left wondering if everyone made it to Melbourne ok!

This CD is a must for all keen supporters and is a decent beginning for anyone looking for a respectable introduction to this kind of homegrown sound.
