(Connected/Shock)

A brand new mix series sees the world’s top lesser-known artists weave their magic while providing a real showcase of their ability. The Connected series is about allowing the mixer to do what they want, each mix will be heavily weighted by the mixing artists own productions/remixes. First up is one of San Francisco’s busiest DJs, Jay-J. He’s has established a worldwide reputation for his ability to turn all things house into all things gold. When not behind the decks Jason Hernandez isn’t a stranger in the studio. Of the 26 tracks on the 2 disc mix, 12 are either produced or remixed by the man himself. I believe this is credit to the mix series, allowing the artist to give the listener a real taste of the vibe they’re feeling.

Jay-J seemed excited about the mix, stating ‘I worked hard on this as I intended this mix compilation to be representative of my style of house and to be pretty much what I play when I am performing my set’. An excitement that will no doubt be echoed by listeners! The first disc is a classy cocktail of rolling basslines, crisp percussion and minimal vocals fused with typical soulful Jay-J vibe. The mix covers much variety with a lavishing of hip-hop flavoured house, jackin’ house and plenty of chord variety that effortlessly sustains out attention. Light sprinkles of classic house sounds give the mix a magical touch not often found in house compilations today. Thrilling combo’s such as Jay-J’s remix of Lisa Shaw’s classic ‘Do It For You’ into arguably his best ever production ‘To The Rhythm’ make this an absolute standout mix. This is assisted by helpful friends including Latrice Barnett, Jill Scott, Jon Cutler and Romanthony.

The second disc takes a slightly different direction adopting a more ‘back room’, Sunday-afternoon-in-the-sun sort of vibe. Once again the big names have came to the party, the likes of Roland Clark, Lenny Fontana, Copyright and Groove Junkies make this a mix that demands time under the laser. Again the mixing is super tight, but takes a more creative turn with shorter mixes and the use of acappella’s. The mix has more of an underground feel that will appeal to those that have a craving for classic sounding house that steers clear of the cheese. The second mix doesn’t hold up as well over the 70 minutes when compared to the first mix, and some critics have argued the tracks used are too similar to each other. It’s a great mix to put on in the background and occupy yourself elsewhere.

Overall this is a top class soulful funky house compilation that is a true gem hiding under the commercial nature of other house compilations. For the DJs, a 2 x LP Vinyl Set is available.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
