(Polydor/Universal)
Gary Dedman and Kevin Andrews, the two halves of The Hoxtons, have been producing and playing music for a very long time. They’ve run their own club night for over ten years and during that time have released a slew of bootlegs and covers under numerous aliases. Sunshine Of Your Love (Sunshine) is their latest attempt to cash in on the cover craze that has been sweeping the world for the past few years.
Based on the review copy provided, Sunshine is formulaic and uninspired. Unlike most promo releases where numerous versions are included, only the radio edit made it to this reviewer. Conventional wisdom would indicate to record labels that sending out radio edits of this quality does not make for overly impressed dance music journalists…
DT’s Radio Edit is a rather lacklustre piece of radio friendly fodder that is catchy but no different from the myriad of other covers out there. Radio edits have a habit of quickly becoming stale and really only find longevity in the crates of mobile wedding DJs. It’s tragic that Sunshine, a true sixties classic and one of Eric Clapton’s finest moments, has been turned into this bland farce. Adding a four to the floor beat does not immediately make something ‘quality dance’ and even Clapton’s timeless Gibson guitar hook can only do so much.
A hung-over Blind Freddy could have pumped out a better version in under fifteen minutes! Hopefully some inspirational remixes will materialise and save this classic from becoming another tragic tribute. Disappointing.
