(Dub Conspiracy/Inertia)
For a chilled out Sunday, few things could beat this drowsy and downbeat offering from New Zealand’s Salmonella Dub. While I’ve never been lucky enough to catch these guys live on stage, I can only speculate how good it must be. Fusing lazy dub, slow rolling beats and reggae with occasional hits of drum and bass, this is spliff-listening at its very best and perfectly suited to our climes. Rug up, kick back in a comfy chair and get ready for some seriously snoozy beats.
Sticking a wooden spoon into the Dub’s back catalogue and giving it a stir, this album of remixes and radio cuts traverses the guys’ back catalogue, including Calming of the Drunken Monkey, Outside the Dubplates and Colonial Dubs, and hands over few tracks for reworking – with delicious results. Savage, from Colonial Dubs, gets a “Fibre Mix” remix that sent me drifting far off into pleasant memories, while Mad Professor’s remix of Tui Dub made me forget where I was altogether!
On the peppier side, Dreadzone takes on Wytaliba and whacks on some low, boomy basslines that beg to be danced to, the LP version of The Bromley East Roller heads off into the ragga zone and Concord Dawn add their light-fingered touch to Ez On. Things even get a little jazzy with the Sativa Records Crew Remix of Longtime, and it’s back to the lo-fi to finish off with an only slightly energetic Mercy, remixed by Du, and Orbital’s “Yasmin Makes me Feel Good” mix.
My only complaint about this seriously fine offering is the arrangement of tracks – I often select albums according to mood and do not usually leap-frog from a reggae mood to a drum and bass mood from one song to the next! But as a whole, it is a great addition to the collection and will definitely get a regular airing on lazy weekend afternoons.
