(Om/Stomp)
San Francisco house label Om Records brings us this 13 track CD of some of the freshest house music to come out of the Miami Winter Music Conference. Mixed by DJ Fluid, this CD is full of quality house in various guises.
This quality CD starts off with Chuck Love’s ‘Livin’ At Night’, funk guitar, squelchy bass line and just the right amount of jack are a great opener, full of spoken and sung vocals. The Andy Caldwell and Amma duo are back to bring us the rocking ‘Don’t You Love Me’, featuring diva vocals that don’t go over the top, very enjoyable. Next up is Groove Junkies’ ‘Just Groovin’, in typical GK style this track has gospel vocals, rolling bass, a nice guitar solo and some funky ass sax. Guaranteed to fill the floors.
There is dubby goodness in Johnny Fiasco’s remix of Uneaq’s ‘Only U’, snippets of vocals and a nice melody work well together. Ultra camp ‘Magnificent’ by Iz & Diz has soulful vocals and is worth a listen, blending well into Fred Everything’s ‘Studio C’, plenty of boomp in this track and a nice take of the typical jazz call-and-response staple, with sax and electronic keys. Great track.
JT Donaldson’s stripped down dub of Chuck Love’s ‘Something Right’ may appeal to some, but I think it lacks the funk that I love about most of JT’s music. The freaky ‘I Wish I Could Be Beautiful’ by Rithma starts out as a camp vocal house number but quickly descends into quirky electronica with a good buzzing bass line and strange samples. The CD closes with an excellent remix of Samantha James downbeat vocal, ‘Rise’.
Great track selection on this CD featuring many different styles of house and quality producers throughout, however I found the mixing to be very heavy handed as if Fluid just couldn’t wait to slam in e v e r y track, not as smooth as I would have expected from Om.
