(Air Recordings/Inertia)
Ali B’s label Air Recordings releases its first single for 2006 in the form of the Will Saul and Ursula Rucker joint ‘Where Is It?’, and the result is quality break beat.
The Simple Records head cheese does what he does best on this release: simple, stripped back breaks with soft drum kits and simultaneously sparse yet lush harmonics flowing around the beats. Though the track originally started as an instrumental, Ursula Rucker was given vocal duties after Will Saul and Ali B played her the track after a Jazz Café gig, and she offered to write some original lyrics. The result is some suitably restrained urban poetry being spouted through some equally restrained beats. A good listening track. On remix duties are Evil Nine, who throw the track onto the dance floor, strip it naked and make it sexy as hell. Sparse beats and drums meld with Evil Nine’s lush yet dry musicality, and Ursula Rucker’s lyrics are rearranged and effectively taken to the next level. Quality percussion and quality beats for the floor, Evil Nine fans should jump on this.
A solid release that proves you can be stripped back yet complex at the same time. Could signal some good things from Ali B’s growing label.
