Kids With Guns is probably not as catchy as some of the other Gorillaz singles, such as Feel Good Inc and other tracks off the Demon Days album, and Jamie T’s Turn To Monsters Mix remix is even more offbeat, almost haphazard. Featuring toasting ala Mike Skinner/The Streets, the remix stylistically takes more of a drum & bass approach. It has a touch of a groove before stripping back to operatic chorus and piano which is quite dark and sombre, almost theatrical, before finally ending with feedback. Could perhaps be saved with a mash up with another track, but it would create a weird vibe if it did get dropped at a club.
New darlings of the electro-rock crossover sound Hot Chip step up next on remix duties. Their approach is more cute and minimal with wind up toy beats and melodies akin to Plaid or similar left-field artists. They include some cool vocal layers, and it’s probably nice enough to be played in a bar, club or on radio. It has quite a fat electro sound kick in mid way through the track, putting it into the more dance-friendly Tiefschwarz or Greenskeepers realm, but it’s still seriously doubtful given how slow it is. Its catchiness and repetition of lines such as “push it real”, leave no doubt why Triple J are already giving this one a flogging. It’s just a shame that they save the nicest sounds till the end, and then it’s over.
