Breaks giants Deekline and Wizard haven’t been able to put a track together in recent times that has rivaled anything they did on their ‘Breaks, Beats and Blondes’ LP, and unfortunately the trend continues with this release.
The original is a mess of great elements put together in a fashion that makes it sound like a roughly pasted together remix: the duo’s favoured booty beats and British raps feature and work well, but jar uncomfortably with the rock chic chorus which feels pasted on to some guitar stabs. Also, the awkward placing and structure of the female lyric makes the track a difficult listen. It’s unfortunate because each element is strong, but the arrangement ultimately lets this mix down.
Proving their worth over and over again, the Breakfastaz sweep in and put humpty dumpty back together again (so to speak). The elements of the original are smoothed out into something which is coherent, club bound and also highly listenable. Best of all, the awkward structure of the rock chic chorus is rearranged into something easier to digest, and it sits well next to the quality raps. Oh, and check out the cheeky Missy Elliot ‘Lose Control’ sample – deftly executed and not overused.
Wizard and Ashley Beedle got together for a couple of 4/4 mixes to close out the release, which are neat but lacking in the energy required to move a crowd. The final movement manages to pick things up nicely, so it could be a good one to mix in late for the DJs.
In short: Deekline and Wizard are saved by the Breakfastaz. A release for breaks fans only.
