Never having been a fan of the colour pink – in fact I have been heard to remark on more than one occasion that “pink is the devil’s colour” – I was not expecting much from the candy pink stickered double CD Masterclass #01, mixed and compiled by Mousse T on the MN2S label. After a listen, I was shown why the phrase ‘never judge a book (or in this case, a CD) by it’s cover’ is in much wider circulation than my literary offering!
Mousse T is a very busy man indeed, what with his DJing, producing, remixing, radio work and co-ownership of Peppermint Jam recordings. He is well into his second decade as a significant influence on the development and promotion of a cross section of musical genres. You can read all about the man behind the music on the groovy x-ray style inserts that come with the CD – thankfully in blue, not pink!
Disc 1, subtitled ‘in the club’, kicks off with some ear pleasing electro bleepy house. By track three the bang factor is on the increase. Not one of the 14 tracks on the CD is out of place in terms of flow, but the mix does plateau around track 7, Ame – Rej, leaving you to anticipate where you will be taken next. The Lil Louis classic, and a personal favourite of mine, French Kiss, is an explosion from leftfield. The remainder of disc 1 gently winding down without leaving you hanging. Track 13 is one of Mousse T’s personal productions, the Tom Novy remix of Horny, and an impressive offering at that.
Disc 2, the after party, begins at a predictably more chilled level. There is a decidedly funkier flavour, perfect for playing after a big night out as it’s gentle on the ears while still keeping your spirits high. The Mousse T Feel Love mix of Moloko’s Sing It Back is a stand out. The remaining 7 tracks including Basement Jaxx – Do Your Thing (Acapella), a super funky Skeewiff ditty, then finishing off with the Trinah track Let’s Stay Together. This track conjured up images of an angel doing lead vocals in bluesy funk style pub band for me.
So, pink bits aside, this release showcases some super sounds. I happily stand corrected!
