Do you know any female chemistry students? Do they rap? This one does. Psalm One has ditched the Bunsen burner for the mic, despite graduating university since her debut with the Nacrobats in 2003. Hailing from that windy city of Chicago, where else did she sign but Mid West indy powerhouse Rhymesayers. Added to that, she’s drafted in Atmosphere’s Ant, as well as Overflo, Maker, Thaione Davis and Madd Crates.
It’s all in a days work for Psalm One on this LP, or rather a day’s work is all on this, with all sorts of topics covered over the course of the album, considered and intelligent rhyming about the issues in this lady’s life. As well as being interesting topically, Psalm One has her flow locked down as well. On lead single The Death of A Frequent Flyer she demands respect with her verse, before calling for people to stop sleeping on the Midwest. Let’s hope those New Yorkers are listening. Also included, as plenty of rappers like to, are interludes, one of which where Psalm One lays into Hoes, ‘cos that’s what they are’. Fair enough. And for those of you who thought a Rhymesayer’s concert was all dudes with stubble and backpacks, Psalm One has included a song for the ladies, which starts of talking to little girls before basically calling all the other rapper girls crap.
Personally I reckon despite being a great singer, Lauren Hill is one of the best rappers around, when she wants to rap, but I guess Psalm One is a rapper, and rappers always think they are the shit. Nonetheless, Death Of A Frequent Flyer is a solid release, from a potentially successful artist. She might not be the utter shit, but there’s enough good production with a diverse MC to lace it with, that after POS, this is another new Rhymesayers act worth checking.
