It would be easy to lump Midnight Juggernauts in with local electro-rock pioneers like Cut Copy and more recent success story The Presets. But although there is certainly a shared musical sensibility and aesthetic among the three, the Juggernauts are marking out their own turf, with a dizzying blend of disco, electro and cheesy stadium rock. But what really sets the Juggernauts (Vincent and Andy to their mums) apart is that beneath the obvious influences and borrowed sounds, there is a core of impeccable songwriting skill.
Shadows is as close as anyone could hope to get to a perfect pop song. It’s a shimmering disco-rock confection, complete with a textbook Daft Punk bassline and cinematic Moroder-esque synths. It’s hardly surprising that it’s one of the biggest tracks on radio at the moment. It’s extremely easy to love.
45 and Rising is an unabashed party tune, with a naff 80s guitar riff vying for attention with the heavily vocodered vocal. The Devil Within is pure cheesy synth goodness in it’s original incarnation, but the wicked Presets remix (also included on this disc) strips back the grunge and lets the dirty electro soul shine.
This is an astonishingly good EP, from one of the most exciting local bands to emerge in recent years. With a national tour underway and a full-length album in the pipeline, the only way is up for the Midnight Juggernauts.
