Trust the Swedish House Mafia to resurrect two tracks that are over twenty years old, electro-fy them and turn them into one irresistible dancefloor rocker. Remember Bronksi Beat’s Smalltown Boy or Why? If you were cognisant during the eighties you will. Axwell and Steve Angello’s hybrid Tell Me Why does an amusingly funky job stitching the two together.
Tell Me Why has been on the receiving end of a heavy rinsing treatment for the last six months. If for some reason you have yet to hear it (how?) you’re in for a real treat. The Radio Edit and Original cut feature soaring soprano vocals and decidedly eighties riffs that perfectly capture the vibe of the original Bronski records while managing to give them a very modern electro makeover. But then you probably already know that.
The first of the two remixes belongs to Raul Rincon. Rincon has been responsible for many a killer anthem, and given free reign to tweak Tell Me Why, he’s conjured up yet another slice of snappy mojo-styled house. The man has an intense love for pianos, infusing them in just about every remix he’s ever made. This one is no exception and the tinkling faux ivory and spin-dry filtered riff over a booty-shaking beat are so lush it’s almost criminal.
Closing the single is a sterling effort from Grant Smilie and Ivan Gough. These Melbourne based knob twiddlers are also known as TV Rock, a duo who were recently propelled to fame by the sleazy “shake what yo mamma gave you” hooks of Flaunt it. They’ve followed the same formula with this remix, keeping the keys largely intact but serving up a brash blend of fat driving bass and chunk-n-sleaze synths for a certified dancefloor bomb.
