Before the first ‘hey motherfuckers!’ has finished squealing out of your system, you just know this album is going to be to be fun. Hyped up pop with a punk feel to it, this is a high energy journey that you need to get onto as soon as possible. Greenskeepers ‘Polo Club’ is jammed packed with party tunes, catchy choruses, rocking guitar work and disco funk. Fans of Talking Heads and The Rapture take note.

The tile track, ‘Polo Club’, has a surfy feel to it with fun vocals and is typical of the GK style that is evident in most of the album. Whereas the second single from the album ‘15 Minutes’ is more of song writer’s song, soaring choruses and good underlying guitar. This seems to be one of the few times on the album GK take themselves seriously tho, ‘Indecision’ deals with the hard task of deciding which sneakers to wear while ‘I Want A New Drug’ describes their search for a drug with none of the side effects that all the best ones have.

There is also some good funk on this album, ‘NY Lady’, has a 70’s bass line backing the story about a high class NY femme. Good stuff. On an electronic funk tip is ‘Martini Lunches’ which is one of the very few tracks on the album without vocals and guitars, instead a basic keyboard riff is backed up by some fat breakbeat. Expect to hear this out and about if it gets released as a single. My favourite track on the album would have to be ‘Lights of Fire’, nice house beat with power choruses from vocalist Nick Maurer. This track squelches in all the right places and a great bass line that builds up nicely.

It’s not all high energy punk styled stuff on this album with the soft pads and funky horns of ‘Bloodclots’ and the melancholy strings and downbeat folk stylings of ‘Cowboy’. The lyrics that GK have come up with on this album range from the serious to the downright silly, take ‘Alphabet Man’ – “I am the Alphabet Man I know my ABCDs, I am the life of the party, at the spelling bees.” Somehow it manages to work and makes for quite a fun song.

The album also contains a jacking bonus mix CD by band member James Curd, mixed live at Love (NYC). This is made up of GK originals and some of their quality remix work. This is full of all your favourites such as the very funky ‘Ocean Floor’ featuring J-Dub and the very popular ‘Pictures Of You’ by East Coast Boogiemen feat. DJ Heather. There is a bit of sloppy mixing in places that is either intentional to prove that it is ‘live’ or am I just being cynical? There are a few of the album tracks remixed on here as well such as ‘NY Lady’, ‘A Week Ago’, ‘Bed Time’ and ‘Alphabet Man’. A couple of those are almost unrecognisable in their remixed form which makes for interesting listening. Also featured is a messed up Members Only remix of my favourite GK track ‘On The Line’.

This is a must have for summer time, expect huge crossover from this album. If the album isn’t enough to draw you in the high quality mix by James Curd should get all you househeads and beat freaks into the fray. Psst… their hit ‘Lotion’ is also ‘hidden’ after track 17. Funny stuff, if you haven’t see the video check it out.
