A huge track out on Hussle Black – Aussie rock band the Church are remixed by Australian dance music veteran Craig Obey of Disco Montego fame. While there have been many similar dance/rock releases in recent years (think Dirty Funker vs Nirvana, Hoxton Whores vs Cream, Slide vs The Hives, and the soon to be released Miami Project vs Queen), this remix of an 80s classic has massive cross-over appeal.

If you haven’t heard of the Church you will definitely have heard ‘Under the Milky Way’ at least once in your life. And if you’re old enough to remember when it was first released, Obey’s remix will transport you back to the sentiment of late-80s post-modern emptiness and forsaken love. Keeping much of the main chorus section from the original single intact, Obey has produced two masterful and moving electro tracks that will freshen up summer club nights. Lush, elegant, wistful, melancholic, and enigmatic as ever, Steve Kilbey’s vocals sit well against the crisp snare drums, minimal kicks and sweeping pad effects.

Featured as the opener on CD 2 of the 2007 Ministry of Sound Annual, it is a definite peak-time crowd pleaser. When the vocal break-down drops in, it is like being in the eye of a storm before the track picks up again with the same energy and intensity it began with. But, it is the Bootleg Mix that stands out as the better of the two. The beats are more minimal, the arrangement is very clever and the bassline is well paced to fit with the break-down.

Craig Obey is a prolific producer of late and is an absolute master at drawing out a build-up to create a surge of anticipation that will lift the energy in a club to a new level. This is one release that will probably catch many people by surprise and is destined for big things in the coming months.
