Ok, so who is a closet Australian Idol fan?? Hands up if you are. I’ll admit it, I’ve watched Australian Idol every season and I’ve been a participating voter (yes, there I said it, I watch and vote for Australian Idol… hehe) I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from these tracks as having heard Paulini rise through the Idol ranks I expected her to be more pop – Beyonce style – rather than funk. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by both tracks – “I Believe” and “So Over You”
The Mobin Master Remix starts with a really nice filtered electro funk feel to it. The track is cruisy and progressive and would be quite suitable for a warm up set. The only real criticism that I have is the unsubtle overuse of the flange effect every so often. The track did not require that little bit extra and unfortunately down-grades it’s quality somewhat, but ultimately the vocals are fun and very pleasing to the ear.
However, my mix of choice would have to be the Reactor Remix. From the outset this feels much more fresh and open. It’s a downtempo/chillout version and is ideal for playing early in a bar (eg – a 5pm Friday set, or a Sunday afternoon set). The vocals sit beautifully within the sound panaroma and aren’t overtaken by loads of other elements that sometimes can get in the way of a good vocal.
The Mr Timothy 12” Remix of “So Over You” has a bit of a slow start to it, but when it does get further in the beat is quite nice and strong. Again another fun soulful house track with Paulini delivering once more with striking vocals. The vocals are rather fast but very catchy. My criticism of this track is the repeat on the word “you”, as it sounds a bit too digital for my liking.
All up I’d give this batch of Paulini remixes a 7 out of 10.
