King Britt and techno are not two of the most likely concepts on paper, but for the discerning dance music listener who knows the man, they will know he has many feathers in his bow. From his funk/disco laden Sylk 130 project, to the mesmerising deep house masterpieces he churned out as Scuba, to the afro centric jazz slow burners he permeated us with as Firefly, Britt has always been a musical chameleon. On his latest effort under his Nova Dream Sequence moniker, King Britt finally executes a long life dream, making tough and funky instrumental techno with a distinct Detroit edge.

Interpretations is an album of Britt’s dreams defined and described through the medium of techno. It may sound almost laughable, and every man woman and child should be wary of what concept albums do with the sub-conscious, but regardless this is a mind bending electronic adventure that is admirably nostalgic. It certainly is nothing new or forward thinking; guys like Derrick May and particularly Stacey Pullen were turning out this kind of mid tempo sex driven techno in the early 90s, but it is so well done it’s impossible not get lost in the familiar whirl of 808 bliss.

There is no track names, just interpreted dreams presented in numerological order. They are all deep, driving, percussive and totally infected by mysticism and mood. Oceans of analogue wash across each “dream” like a sonic tide, only occasionally punctuated by the distant vocals that seem to get swept away in the storm. Apart from Dream 9, a slow, syncopated breather that evokes an almost reflective mood shift, Interpretations is a straight up tech delight that rarely deviates in pace or structure. It is testament to Britt’s genuine talent and experience that the album is never dull but actually thrilling, emotive and down right funky.
