Broadbeatz is the new breaks all-girl group, formed by long time breaks aficionados Angel Farringdon, Nicky Screwface, and new comer Isis. Whilst it is often derided for sounding like slowed down dnb, I love the harder edged “tear-out” style of breaks, and the very well produced single Crossfire is the best of the best.
The uncompromising tune begins at a steady pace and quickly hits it stride, rocking along with a high level of energy. And, unlike dnb when it’s made by women (as can often be the case…), there’s none of this singing about love or loss and crap like that – this is just music to go off to on the dance floor. My only complaint is that this sounds a little too much like Screwface’s other compositions, which whilst they’re all damn good, I wonder how much input the other girls actually had.
Soul Jah is a little on the lighter side than Crossfire, with more mellow, reggae influence beats and token rasta sample. I also enjoy this style of breaks a lot, and again this is one of the better produced tunes around at the moment. A lot more though has been given to the placement of samples, and the tune flows along very nicely, never becoming dull or repetitive like, for example, Care in the Community’s Limb By Limb, which loses the listener quite quickly. No, Soul Jah will have you bopping along and thumping your thigh the whole while.
Super Ronnie’s Squat Rave by Angel Farringon and Mr Reload is also a great track, but doesn’t stand out as well as the Broadbeatz tunes. It lacks the oomph of the previous tunes, and kind of meanders rather than rocks, although Mr Reload’s MCing certainly hypes it up. The Entity boys give it a heavy dose of rave style breaks, making it punchier and a lot more fun, and although it isn’t straying too far from it’s sound, in my mind the remix is better than the original.
