The FabricLive series has produced some absolute cracker mix ups and I’m sure everyone has their favourites, mine definitely being Jacques lu Cont’s (09). For release 31 duties are handed to none other than The Glimmers, their last mix for the DJ Kicks series was red hot and so this mix has a lot to live up to. Squeezing 21 tracks into one CD, it is jam packed with techyelectrodiscopunkfunkhouse. Trying to put the style of this album into one genre is impossible as they jump around from classic tracks through to new school screamers. Blending so many styles means that the mixing isn’t always smooth, then again neither is the grittiness of the Glimmers style.

We kick things off with a Glimmers remix of glam rockers Roxy Music’s ‘Same Old Scene’, good production work from the Glimmers. As is their ‘More Oder’ remix of Freddie Mercury’s ‘Love Kills’, a tribute in both name and spirit to Italy’s synth master Giorgio Moroder. Plenty of bleeps and beeps in this one. If you dig your Italo styles and weird electronica you are in for a treat with The League Unlimited Orchestra’s ‘Things That Dreams Are Made Of’, plenty of bumps, spills and thrills on this track. The Glimmers move into some techy goodness with 2 minutes of Prins Thomas vs. Blackbelt Andersen’s ‘En Real T Jukkas’, nice heavy beats and industrial sounds.

As mentioned, The Glimmers don’t stick with one style for too long, rocketing head first into Indie stomper ‘Dance Me In’ (JD Twitch and The Truffle Club’s Optimo Remix) from Sons and Daughters. Great track. There is also some hot electronica such as the classic Freez’s ‘I.O.U (I.DUB.U.)’ and Mekon’s ‘Boy Bitten’ (Padded Cell Remix). The Glimmers definitely stay eclectic, pulling out such the 1983 oddity from George Kranz with ‘Din Daa Daa’, lots of interesting vocal workouts held together by a solitary clap throughout. Funny stuff. Another stroke of madness/genius is splicing the reggae vibes of Black Slate’s ‘Sticks Man’ in the middle of Urban Jungle’s ‘Bad Man’ (Black Dog Bite Mix).

This is a good album but it lacks a bit of the funk from their DJ Kicks mix, the constant jumping of styles results in a mix that doesn’t flow as well as it could. If you like your electrorock mash up then this one is definitely for you.
