For those of you that have not heard of Lily Allen, you must have been born under a rock. Daughter of Keith Allen (actor and has worked musically with New Order and Blur bassist) and lazily dubbed as the female Mike Skinner (The Streets) by many, she has been having huge success on both the alternative and mainstream music scene. Getting huge plays from national stations such as Triple J, her album has been a winner on all fronts.
Lily’s newest single release is the ska based ‘LDN’, abbreviation for London, and is a breezy summertime pop number that despite it’s uplifting sounds, has a dark undercurrent of cynicism about London city. Sampling heavily from Tommy McCook & the Supersonics ‘Reggae Merengue’ Lily sings over the tune about granny muggers, pimps, and addicted hookers. Catchy and yet disturbing at the same time, ‘LDN’ is a shadowy tribute to the city in which Lily Allen lives.
Her unique voice is easily recognised over the bubbly music and with her rhymes of “a fella looking dapper and he’s sitting with a slapper, then I see it’s a pimp with his crack-whore”, she is clever in her ‘mockney’ accent lyrics whilst remaining cute, poppy, and original all at the same time. With an interesting flipside to this release being The Kooks’ ‘Naïve’ it makes a great second single release. At only 20yrs old, Lily will prove her worth over the coming years. Expect to hear lots more about this girl.
