The ideal accompaniment for a coastal drive, there is nothing ugly about this release. From the irresistible flamenco-style plucky guitar of opener Soul Horizon to the final strains of undulating closer Those Days, ‘Beyond An Infinite’ elevates your soul.
The Beauty Room moniker represents Kirk Degiorgio’s collaboration with Jinado – provider of sublime vocals. Kirk Degiorgio is best known as an electronic producer/British techno pioneer, Jinado is also usually associated with the electronic dance genre. Together they supply “sunshine pop”. Mellow grooves featuring London’s heritage orchestra could easily be banished to the easy-listening pile and dismissed as background music.
Reaching for it whilst hungover and stuck in a power-failure-induced gridlock however, I discovered my elixir – “The weight of the world crashin’ over me, gotta keep my head above the clouds in my mind.” The Weight Of The World is a stand-out track I return to constantly and features vocals that sound like angels on ecstasy. Simple but elegant, the backing’s rippling piano chords and understated drumming perfectly complement this lament. I challenge you not to sway along like Stevie Wonder.
Beach Boys inspired harmonies caress your eardrums, and Holding On proves that technological advances can legitimise the desire to interpret influences. There is a place for Fender Rhodes ballads within today’s sonic wanderlust. Guitar-work is deftly supplied by label mate Ian O’Brien and gorgeous melodic interplay is achieved. Understated instrumentation is laid down to provide a canvas for the most beautiful work of art, direct from Jinado’s pipes. Vocal duties are supplied courtesy of Kirk Degiorgio in Shades Of Yesterday. The lilting strings promise emotional succour but we are left feeling jilted. This may be a comparative reaction to Jinado’s unparalleled mastery.
Quizzing my network of music aficionados it seems a widely held belief that the label Peacefrog is synonymous with techno. Although this album is eons away from that expectation. Once you have dealt with the confusion, this sonic revelation will wash over you like a gentle, summer breeze. The overall vibe is down tempo and chilled but these pensive musings illuminate hope – “Burn all my bridges/ Bury the past/ I see the future with you there’s no turning back.” Pack this one for your honeymoon.
