AA – Adam Sky Remix
Just when electro was beginning to become a dirty word (in my world anyway), along come Riot in Belgium to save the day. Riot is a cross-border project, consisting of Sydney boy Bennie Single and Melbournian Joel Dickson. It doesn’t take much calculation to see what’s going on here. Bennie (aka DJ Damage) is part of the Bang Gang crew. Joel is an ex-member of Cut Copy. They cite Technotronic as an inspiration. This was always going to be special.
And special it is. Last year the boys released their debut cut ‘Acid Never Lies’ on Headman’s Relish Records, which was a slow-burner and a nice low-key way to get the name out there, piqueing the attention of luminaries like Tiga. ‘La Musique’, however, is the star-maker. It’s a splashy, impeccably produced slab of dancefloor electro, with a sonic harshness and Euro sneer which belies its Australian provenance. From the outset there’s no fucking around, with a skull-pounding kick drum and jaunty synth stabs setting the scene for the carnage to come. By the time the abrasive French vocal kicks in at around the 2 minute mark, it has become a dirty, sexy, utterly irresistable dancefloor bomb.
It’s the kind of track that will spawn countless remixes over the coming months, and the mix on the flip is a promising start, courtesy of the legendary Adam Sky (aka Adamski). It’s an interesting take, interspersing a monotonous fuzzy droning synth with a wonderfully camp hands-in-the-air piano line. There are clearly big things happening for Riot in Belgium at the moment, touring nationally with the Future Music Festival and supporting Soulwax over the next few months. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I can’t wait to see what they do next.
