Every now and again while listening to the radio I hear some dodgy “club” remix of whatever pop hit is doing the rounds at the moment. Usually sounding like a 5 minute rehash of the original with sped up vocals and a generic house beat, it makes you hope that nobody does it to one of your favourite tunes. Luckily though, every now and again you also come across a great bootleg done by someone with a bit more clout to their name. This is one of those times!
While working in the studio together, John ‘00’ Fleming and Wizzy Noise came up with this bootleg for their live shows. Taking the best bits of the original, they come up with a massive trance take on the tune. The familiar eery intro quickly builds into some nice beats and bassline. Dashes of the guitar remind you of the original song, and almost three minutes in we hear the defiant “No one’s gonna take me alive!” in a quick break before things get going again. Deciding to use some cut up effects on the vocals instead of using the whole original verse fits in with the style of the tune, which is tough and driving without being too over-the-top.
A break at 4 minutes gives us the chorus, which builds up into a headbanging moment worthy of Wayne’s World comparisons. Some more driving beats and synths based on the original, and I think we have ourselves a winner. I think it stays true enough to the original without being disrespectful and at the same time adds enough to make it stand out as a club tune. Although I have a feeling I won’t be hearing it on the radio on the weekend!
