NYC-based producer / DJ Alex Gimeno (aka Ursula 1000 in tribute to Dr. No’s Ursula Andress) has long represented the more extrovert / upbeat end of Thievery Corporation’s Eighteenth Street Lounge label roster, and this first 12” to be lifted from his recent third album ‘Here Comes Tomorrow’ arrives hot on the heels of his recent Australian tour as part of this year’s Good Vibrations festival lineup. In its original album form, ‘Urgent / Anxious’ shows Gimeno joining forces with Ze Records mutant disco vocalist Cristina for a slice of midtempo breaks that carries more than a hint of Product.01’s icy Euro-vampism in the way in which the fashionably-accented female vocals collide with crisp snares and heavily treated guitar stabs.

While it’s not exactly breakout stuff, it’s certainly catchy and radio-friendly, coming across particularly as exactly the sort of trendy post-electroclash breaks you might expect to see on a car ad aimed at twenty somethings. Pleasant and palatable, but not incredible. Ladytron’s reworking unfortunately comes across as one of their less memorable remixes, with punching pseudo industrial / New Beat drum machines and monotonous fuzzed-up analogue bass synths adding an EBM edge that definitely suits the detached-sounding vocals in a gothy sense, but doesn’t really develop or go anywhere particularly interesting. Of the various mixes on offer, Canadian breaks producer Miyagi’s reworking easily represents the most worthwhile moment here, taking things into territory similar to the Crystal Method by liberally scattering rockist guitar riffage over a streamlined backing of flanging techfunk synths, in what’s by far the most lively listen here. A solid remix package that’s more likely to appeal to heads of the breaks persuasion, but in short, nothing to write home about.
