It should have been a match made in heaven. Y4K is one of the most revered mix series in the world. Annie Nightingale is a legend – one of the breaks scene’s most powerful tastemakers, a woman with (usually) impeccable taste and unparalleled access to great new music. Given this unique pairing, this should have been a visionary, forward thinking mix. Sadly, it’s not.

There are some great tracks here, but basically it is a haphazard, arbitrary collection of last year’s big floorfillers and largely forgettable filler. The first sign of trouble is that it isn’t a mix at all, but an unmixed compilation. Despite being marketed as a revolutionary concept, the unmixed compilation is a fairly redundant beast in the age of digital downloads. Especially redundant when any self respecting breaks enthusiast will own a good number of these tunes already.

It’s not all bad news. Adam Freeland’s mix of K-Swing and Beber’s This Was The Sound is one of the most memorable tracks of the past year, and a surefire sign that Mr F is back in fine form. Drumattic Twins’ Hyperspeed is utterly wonderful, with a dizzying array of naff old skool electro noises competing for attention with Captain Rock, and a breakdown that would make the most jaded cynic weak at the knees. And final track Grey Skies is an amusing reminder that The Orb have remained squarely in the mid-90s. But it’s just not enough to make up for having to sit through D. Ramirez’s turgid “electro” massacre of Electro Disco, or Get ‘Em High for the millionth time.

The best Y4Ks are surprising, sometimes idiosyncratic gems which reveal something about the artist mixing them – for me, all this reveals is that Annie couldn’t be bothered. It pains me that this is such a downbeat review, but from Y4K and Annie Nightingale I expected better.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
