Yet another month slides by and yet another compilation series akin to ‘Back to Mine’ and ‘My Definition’ is released. The new ‘The DJ Inside Me’ compilation is upon us and it’s as upbeat as Robin Williams on amphetamines. French striker (played for France and Liverpool) Djibril Cisse is the first cab off the ranks and it appears that that the 14.4M pound signing to Liverpool has a few DJ skills, despite some of the antiquated track selections.

He kicks us off with the ska-driven hip-hop tune from Play Mo Bitch and doesn’t leave much to the imagination in the dropping of Groove Armada’s biggest selling tune, ‘Superstylin’. Chopping it in would have been the only real way of mixing these two tracks, but Cisse lifts his game from here on in. Driving some funky house onto the field shortly after with ‘The Pig Farm’ and then the inflated sexual innuendo in MAW’s ‘Work’.

As mentioned, the mixing improves significantly after his earlier warm-up, and he kicks many genre-crosses into the penalty box. From hip-hop to classic house and African rhythms to Latino stylings; he’s got it all covered. It’s surprisingly good despite the commercial appeal earlier in the release, but remember that this is an ‘inspired’ by compilation and we are taken on a journey of the songs that Cisse has a connection with.

If you dig soccer and want a sample of a high-profile players musical tastes or have your own special affinity with dance music, this album is a grand-final goal winner for sure. Decent mixing and some fantastic track selections, it seems Cisse has taste in everything but his hair-colour.
