Toolroom Records has become one of the most consistent labels in recent times and their latest release is jam-packed with enough mixes the make a cake.
Superbass is the production guise of Paul Harris (of Dirty Vegas fame) and Jay P (from Stretch and Vern) and is clearly designed as an outlet for their more pop focused sounds. Don’t Be Silent is a melodic house affair and is very reminiscent of Deep Dish’s 2005 hit, Say Hello. A warm driving bassline, lush stabs of strings and a haunting female vocal set up a very radio friendly tune. However – unlike the Deep Dish track – the main vocal hook lacks any real punch and verges on the lethargic. This is wallpaper stuff.
The Dirty South mix does exactly what you would expect: the vocal is sexed up, a bouncy electro bassline is added along with some noisy synth lines. Dirty South has been pumping out the remixes lately and while there is no doubt the man has talent, this mix sounds a little too familiar (right down to the triplet on the end of his 8 bar bassline).
Next up on remix duties is Hungarian producer, Workidz. This is easily the pick of the bunch and captures the electro-tech sound that is creeping further into the mainstream. The bass is darker, the percussion crunchier and more intricate, and the vocal finally comes into it’s own in a sparse and rewarding breakdown. An Audiofly mix rounds out this rather comprehensive package with a much deeper, glitchy, tech-house affair.
This is a big release with plenty of cuts to choose from. However, I am only choosing one of them.
