Sydney producer / DJ K.I.M. (real name Kimberley Isaac Moyes) is already best known to Modular fans as one half of local synth-rockers The Presets, and this latest 12” through Sydney pranksters Bang Gang 12 Inches shows Moyes contributing a retro electro-laced club offering under his given name that’s perhaps not exactly a million miles removed from his mothership band. In this case, the focus falls more distinctly upon rattling batucada Brazilian percussion, with metallic-sounding drums rippling beneath a tight backdrop of bright electro synthlines and crisp house snares, with Moyes’ bellowed vocal adding an anarchic rowdy punk / pub-rock edge that even appropriates a Pixies lyric (“whores in my head”) at one point as the bass synths buzz and swell. On the flip, the Bag Raiders offer up a reworking that pushes things more towards Tiefschwarz-esque icy electro-fuelled tech-house, with distorted synth lines and clipped Bambaataa-style rhythms providing a rolling backdrop for stutter-edited vocals shortly before things slide into a rockist chorus synth-breakdown that’s straight out of the Preset’s recent ‘Beams’ album. Fans hankering for new material in the absence of a new Presets record being on the immediate horizon should be well pleased.
