That sax, oh no that sax! When I first heard this tune on Radio 1, I was singing the saxophone hook for days. And now I’m doing it again. It’s more addictive than crack.
‘Destination Calabria’ by Alex Gaudino is one hell of a good piece of house music. Catchy, sexy, funky and just plain fun. The bassline is not the hook, and is very subtle, getting the subs moving with very little top end. It’s a bassline that one feels more than hears. The vocal is wonderful, and well delivered, but I think the tune could work without it as the vocal is not the centrepoint, rather the sampled sax hook.
The Paul Emmanuel mix is the obligatory massive sounding electro rework. It sounds dark and not as fun or sexy as the original, which is a shame. The Laidback Luke mix is very cool, but I’m not to sure what it’s trying to be. It could be mainroom and massive, but then again, it could be chilled. A top effort nonetheless.
I think the Drunkenmunky 2007 remake is a piss take. It can’t be serious, even just from the name! Before the bass kicks in a voice goes ‘check this out’, and you get that cheesy euro dance style bass and lead. The saxophone is replaced largely by trance strings. It’s incredibly bad. It’s a pisstake for sure, to appeal to the ringtone market.
The original is one hell of a tune, and now a must have. Get it now.
