Any band that puts out their debut album on cassette tape and releases the first single exclusively on vinyl must have something of a massive nostalgic streak. This fun slice of indie pop from Sydney’s Soft Tigers is a fittingly whimsical ode about an attempt to reconcile with a troublesome girl named Maria.
The minimal retro guitar riffs crackle with lo-fi authenticity and the lyrics are brimming with Sydney references about “drinking at the Gaslight” and “skulking in off Crown Street”. Although it’s catchy, this song sounds too recycled to be particularly memorable – it’s the sort of tune that would sound great at an indie club night as you dance around blind drunk, but slightly mediocre at home by yourself. On the b-side The Bumblebeez provide the garbled Sharapova remix, which chops up the original in various ways, adding some new beats as well as a nice glockenspiel solo. It’s a little bit amateurish, but provides a more robust, dance floor friendly version of the original.
The Soft Tigers have obvious potential; they just haven’t demonstrated a very distinctive sound this time round. A band to watch out for.
